Watson to succeed Otwell as CEO at Maury Regional Medical Center
COLUMBIA, Tenn. – Alan Watson, current chief operating officer (COO) at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC), has been selected to succeed Robert Otwell upon his retirement, according to MRMC Board of Trustees Chairman Doug Williamson.
“On behalf of the board of trustees, it is my pleasure to announce that Alan Watson will assume the position of chief executive officer following Robert Otwell’s retirement,” said Williamson. “When Robert began considering his long-term plans for retirement two years ago, the succession planning process began. Alan was selected to join the senior leadership team and he has done an outstanding job. The board, after an extensive review, felt that Alan had the knowledge, character and experience to make him the perfect fit for the medical center.
“Robert has done a remarkable job of advancing clinical quality and customer service, resulting in the medical center being ranked among the top health systems in the nation for two consecutive years. We are grateful for his service and know that Alan will continue that tradition of outstanding care for those we serve.”
Watson, who has approximately 30 years experience in the health care industry, has served as COO since February 2010. Prior to his position at MRMC, Watson served as a CEO with Mercy Health Partners for four years, leading three community hospitals. He has also served as CEO of Bradley Memorial Hospital in Cleveland, Tennessee, assistant CEO at Cleveland Community Hospital and assistant administrator at Bradley Memorial Hospital.
Chief of Staff Grant Barr, M.D., stated, “Alan Watson has a broad base of experience coupled with strong administrative and leadership skills. He has the trust and confidence of the medical staff and will provide continuity to programs which are already extraordinarily successful. We anticipate no significant course change as Alan will be a steady hand on the tiller as Maury Regional Medical Center continues to achieve excellence every day.”
Otwell will remain at the medical center until a new COO has been selected to join Watson. The medical center will begin a national search in June.
“I am pleased that the board has selected Alan for this position. I am immensely proud of Maury Regional Medical Center and the employees, physicians and volunteers who have taken health care in this region to new heights. I am confident that the Maury Regional leadership team, with Alan as CEO, will propel the organization to become a national role model for health care,” said Otwell.
MRMC is a 275-bed facility that serves more than 260,000 people in southern Middle Tennessee and has a medical staff of more than 200 physicians. From a comprehensive interventional and surgical heart program to a neonatal intensive care and cancer center, the medical center offers a wide range of advanced services.
