MAURY REGIONAL AND YMCA OFFER DIABETES PROGRAM

COLUMBIA, Tenn.—Maury Regional Hospital (MRH) and the Maury County YMCA have joined together once again to offer the Choose Your Life Program, a series of informational classes on diabetes beginning May 13. Choose Your Life is a 12-week program focused on the prevention and education of anyone diagnosed or at risk for type 2 diabetes.

“The last Choose Your Life class this past January was received very well and had full attendance. Participants expressed that they really benefited from learning the true physiological impacts of high blood sugar and that there is more to living with diabetes than simply regulating food intake,” said Donna Shedd, MRH diabetes program coordinator.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin (a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy). The cause of diabetes is unknown, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

While certain health problems (including being overweight, unhealthy cholesterol, smoking, high blood glucose, high blood pressure, and physical inactivity) put one at higher risk for diabetes and heart disease, studies show that people with pre-diabetes can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes by making changes in their diet and increasing their level of physical activity.

During the 12-week program, participants will meet weekly with a personal trainer to develop an exercise program that will benefit their health. Shedd will provide educational classes on nutrition and proper foot and eye care.

Class size is limited. The next session begins on Tuesday, May 13 at 10 a.m. at the Maury County YMCA. For more information, contact Drew Massey at the YMCA at 540.8320 or amassey@ymcamidtn.org.
