MAURY REGIONAL DIABETES EDUCATION GROUP DISCUSSES KIDNEY FUNCTION

COLUMBIA, Tenn. — The Diabetes Education Group at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) will host a meeting titled “Diabetes and Kidney Function” on Tuesday, April 5, in the medical center’s Private Dining Room One at 11:30 a.m. The group, which meets monthly at MRMC, encourages the public to attend this free event.

Patricia Renfro, RN, will discuss the effect that diabetes can have on kidney function and how dialysis is used to treat kidney failure.

According to Donna Shedd, RN and certified diabetes educator at MRMC, diabetes can have a significant impact on the function of the kidneys. “The kidneys act as filters, removing waste products from the blood,” said Shedd. “High blood sugar can cause damage to the kidneys, resulting in the loss of ability to filter waste. Patricia will explain the basics of kidney function and how dialysis is used to treat kidney failure.”
