COLUMBIA, Tenn.— While the May flood waters have subsided, those individuals impacted by this unexpected event continue to cope with devastation in the aftermath. The Maury Regional Health Care Foundation reached out to some of these families in southern Middle Tennessee who are without flood insurance and have mounting bills as they attempt to repair the damage to their homes and replace their belongings.

“Maury Regional Medical Center had employees who experienced significant damage to their homes and property,” said Joe Kilgore, executive director of the foundation. “We quickly spread the word that assistance was available to them through the William R. Walter Employee Assistance Fund. To date, we have provided a total of $10,450 to nine families whose lives have been turned upside down by this event.”

Among those is Jamie Smith, a nurse who works in the Intensive Care Unit at MRMC, whose house incurred severe damage.

“I can’t begin to explain how much I appreciate the generosity of those at Maury Regional,” said Smith. “After my house was completely flooded and we lost everything, I didn’t know how we were going to make it. When coworkers and the foundation came through, it was an indescribable blessing.”

As the word spread about the good works of the foundation, the donations to assist these families continued to increase. More than $5,000 has been donated to the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation to benefit flood victims.

Retired physician Eslick Daniel, who serves as chair of the foundation, is quick to point out that this is just one of the many ways that the foundation helps those in need.

“We have so many funds that make a difference in the lives of others. From the helping financially challenged patients pay for their medication to providing wigs for breast cancer patients, the foundation is having a profound impact on others at their greatest time of need,” said Daniel.
