Health Care Foundation helps women fighting breast cancer

COLUMBIA, Tenn.  – In October, the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation celebrated its seventh year of helping meet health care needs in the region served by Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC). Among those needs are the many services provided by the Maury Regional Women’s Center.

By providing wigs, head pieces, camisoles and scarves for cancer patients, help with transportation for those unable to make it to treatments on their own and free mammograms for those who cannot afford them, the Foundation Women’s Center Fund assists between 200 and 250 women each year who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Statistics show that one in every eight women is likely to be diagnosed with some form of breast cancer,” said Women’s Center Director Dana Salters. “I urge any woman over the age of 40 who has not had a mammogram within the last year to call us at 380.4044 to schedule an appointment. This is a matter that is much too important to ignore. Thanks to the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation, no woman needs to go undiagnosed and early detection can mean a longer life.”

The Foundation also partnered this year  with the YMCA of Maury County to offer the After Breast Cancer (ABC) program which has provided support and encouragement to more than 70 women undergoing breast cancer treatment. The ABC program included a free 16-week YMCA membership during which participants received a customized exercise plan and nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian.

MRMC offers a variety of services and treatment options for women, including digital mammography to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, breast ultrasound, MRI-guided breast biopsy, breast surgery, lymphedema management and advanced radiation therapy treatments for breast cancer.
