Maury Regional announces July support group meetings

COLUMBIA, Tenn. — Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) offers a variety of education and support groups led by dedicated staff members who volunteer their time and expertise to help ensure community members learn more about managing their health. The following groups will be meeting in July and the community is encouraged to attend: 

The Diabetes Education Group will meet Tuesday, July 3, at 11:30 a.m. in the medical center’s Private Dining Room One. Guest speaker Beth Smith will discuss methods of giving insulin for managing diabetes. Insulin comes in a variety of types with different methods of delivery such as drawing into a syringe, insulin pens and insulin pumps. Those with diabetes as well as family members and friends are invited to attend this free event to learn more about this important topic. The MRMC Diabetes Education Group meets regularly on the first Tuesday of each month. The public is invited to attend these free meetings. For information, call 931.540.4324.

The Celiac Support Group will meet at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, in the MRMC First Floor Conference Room. Celiac is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine when gluten and other proteins found in wheat, barley and rye are ingested. According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, one of every 133 Americans live with celiac disease. The celiac support group meets quarterly. For more information, call 931.381.1111, ext. 1275.

The Ostomy Partners Support Group will hold its summer picnic beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, at the MRMC Annex. Group members as well as family and friends are invited to attend. Call Rita Hillis at 931.490.4600 to learn more.

Smoking Cessation Classes will be held on the first four Mondays of July (2, 9, 16 and 12). Participants are required to purchase a $10 class guide which will contain exercises for each class topic. All instructors are former smokers and health professionals who understand the challenges that come with breaking this habit. For more information and to register, call 931.490.7076.

Expectant Parent Classes are also offered each month with a variety of course topics, including a comprehensive six-hour class, breastfeeding, and a siblings class designed for new brothers and sisters.
