Wayne Medical Center honors nurse for fifty years of service

WAYNESBORO, Tenn. —Wayne Medical Center (WMC) recently honored a member of its nursing staff who has provided 50 years of service to the hospital and its patients.

Mary Estes began working at the hospital in 1964, shortly after the facility opened as Wayne County Hospital. Estes is a licensed practical nurse who has served in many roles during the past five decades. She worked as a surgical assistant for approximately 40 years, assisting physicians including Dr. J.V. Mangubat, for whom the medical center’s surgery suite was recently named.

In addition to her work in surgery, Estes has worked in the emergency room, in the hospital’s former obstetrics unit and the medical/surgical unit. She currently works on the Same Day Surgery unit and in the WMC Specialty Clinic.

“Mary has provided outstanding service to our hospital and our community during the last fifty years and continues to do so,” said CEO Harley Smith. “Her experience and dedication are truly appreciated.”

On March 19, the employees of WMC surprised Estes with a reception marking her half century of service. Many of her current co-workers were in attendance along with family members and physicians with whom she has worked during her career.
