The Maury Regional Health multidisciplinary breast center team includes imaging specialists, pathologists, breast and reconstructive surgeons, oncologists and breast health navigators. Our commitment to quality has resulted in Maury Regional Medical Center being accredited as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology and National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers recognition by the American College of Surgeons.
Mammography
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. The best defense is early detection. Maury Regional Health recommends that all women ages 40 and older receive a mammogram annually. We provide mammography services at locations throughout southern Middle Tennessee, including:

Genius™ 3D Mammography™
Genius™ 3D Mammography™ is available at the Maury Regional Women's Center in Columbia, Marshall Medical Center in Lewisburg, Wayne Medical Center in Waynesboro and at Spring Hill Imaging Center in Spring Hill. Utilizing advanced technology, Genius™ 3D exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancer when compared to conventional 2D mammography. Breast Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging of the breast is primarily used to help diagnose breast abnormalities found during a mammogram or physical exam. Ultrasound assists in determining if an abnormality is solid, such as a tumor (benign or cancerous) or fluid-filled, such as a cyst.
Breast ultrasound is available at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, Marshall Medical Center in Lewisburg and Wayne Medical Center in Waynesboro.
Breast Biopsy
In the event that a lump is discovered and confirmed with a diagnostic mammogram, the next course of action recommended by your physician will most likely be a biopsy. A biopsy is a procedure that is conducted to obtain a sample of the tissue in question to determine if it is benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). At Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, surgeons in collaboration with the radiologists conduct three types of biopsies:
- Stereotactic
- Ultrasound-guided
- Open Biopsy (surgical)
Maury Regional's approach to diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer combines high-quality care with compassion. If a biopsy confirms a cancerous mass, you and your physician will determine the best course of treatment—most often a lumpectomy or mastectomy. Following the removal of the cancerous tissue, you may be required to take chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination of the two depending upon the stage of cancer. You and your physician will then select an oncologist, a physician who specializes in treating patients with cancer.
Lymphedema Management
Lymphedema, most commonly associated with breast cancer, occurs when lymph fluid fills excessively in the lymph vessels, which causes swelling (edema) in the limbs and/or trunk. This can cause the tissue to become susceptible to infection, injury and fibrosis. Trained and certified therapists provide patients with a comprehensive lymphedema management program.
Our physical therapy centers provide a comprehensive lymphedema management program through trained, certified therapists. Depending on your particular case, therapy may include: manual lymph drainage, multi-layer bandaging, a compression garment, treatment with compression pump and instruction in lifestyle modifications to help control lymphedema.

Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Breast Cancer Support Group meets on the third Monday of each month at Maury Regional Medical Center in the Women's Center in the Pavilion (no meetings July, August and December). Women who have experienced breast cancer are provided support and solutions to problems from trained professionals and guest speakers. For more details, please call 931.540.4166.
Reach to Recovery is a volunteer visitation program for breast surgery patients. The Reach to Recovery volunteer, a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, provides emotional support and an educational kit containing a temporary prosthesis and information. Wig Bank
The Women's Center also operates a wig bank and provides services to patients through the Women's Center Fund of the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation. The wig bank is a collection of wigs, head wraps and other head coverings that are donated to women undergoing chemotherapy who would not otherwise be able to acquire such pieces. The fund also provides mammograms for women who cannot financially afford this screening.
