Maury Regional announces new board appointments

COLUMBIA, TN – The Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) Board of Trustees recently announced annual appointments to the board of trustees and advisory board.

Houston Parks was elected chair of the board of trustees for 2018. He has served as vice chair since 2016 and been a member of the board since 2009. He succeeds Doug Williamson who will remain on the board for his 15th year of service, having served the past nine years as chair. Parks is an attorney in private practice with the law firm of Parks, Bryant and Snyder, PLLC. Previously, he served as senior trust officer at First Farmers & Merchants Bank in Columbia for 19 years after practicing law in private practice from 1976 until 1997. He received his law degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville after completing his undergraduate degree at Rhodes College in Memphis.

Rodney Poling, M.D., was elected vice chair. Dr. Poling has served on the board since 2016 and is a past member of the advisory board. He joined the MRMC medical staff in 1990 and is board certified in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry. He received his medical degree from the University of Kansas in Kansas City and completed his residency at San Diego Naval Hospital Department of Psychiatry. His leadership roles at the medical center include serving as chief of staff, vice chief of staff, chair of medicine and psychiatry divisions, and chair of the Credentials Committee and Education and Library Committee. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Jan McKeel is a newly appointed board member, filling the position vacated by Charlotte Battles who retired from the board after 12 years of service. McKeel previously served as a member of the advisory board. She is the executive director of the South Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance, a nonprofit that works to develop the workforce through efforts with economic development, education and employment. She holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Kentucky and a master’s degree in business administration from Murray State University.

They have served as trusted advisors and helped to guide our organization as we continue to grow,” said Maury Regional Health CEO Alan Watson. “We also look forward to working with Houston and Dr. Poling as they take on additional leadership responsibilities and Jan as she joins the outstanding group of community leaders who serve on our governing board.”

New advisory board members appointed are Dr. Jeffrey Adams, Hendley Edwards, Beverly Horner, Bethany Lay, Chaz Molder and Willie Nelson.

Jeffrey Adams, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, has been a member of the medical staff since 1991. He served as chief of staff in 2009 and has served on numerous medical staff committees. Dr. Adams received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis and completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery.

Hendley Edwards is Mt. Pleasant city president for Heritage Bank and Trust, where he has been employed since 2012. He has more than 38 years of experience as a lender. His responsibilities include consumer and commercial products for the bank branch serving Mt. Pleasant and southern Maury County. Edwards’ education includes the Graduate School of Banking of the South, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and Columbia State Community College.

Beverly Horner is member-in-charge of the KraftCPAs assurance services department and Columbia office. She joined the firm in 1988. In addition to overseeing quality control and administration of the audit practice, she is a member on the firm's financial institutions team. She is a certified public accountant, certified financial services auditor and registered qualified peer reviewer. She holds a master of business administration from East Tennessee State University and a bachelor’s in chemistry from Middle Tennessee State University.

Bethany Lay is the vice president for advancement and executive director of Columbia State Community College Foundation. She has been employed at the college since 2010 and in her role is responsible for leadership and management of the foundation and division of the college dedicated to resources and gift development. Lay received an Education Specialist in Administration and Supervision degree from Tennessee State University, a master of arts in curriculum and instruction degree from Concordia University Chicago and a bachelor of science in education from Freed-Hardeman College.

Chaz Molder, life-long Maury Countian and attorney, is a founding partner at Mounger & Molder, PLLC, in Columbia. His practice is litigation oriented, with a primary focus on civil litigation. Chaz holds a doctor of jurisprudence degree from the University of Memphis School of Law and a bachelor of arts from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Prior to forming Mounger & Molder, Chaz worked at the former law firm of Hardin & Parkes in Columbia. His prior experience includes serving as an associate at the law firm of Hardin & Parkes.  

Willie Nelson is a certified quality engineer. Nelson’s experience includes 22 years as a quality engineer and quality engineer group leader for the General Motors Spring Hill Manufacturing facility, retiring in 2017. His prior experience includes 15 years as a statistician and trainer for EG&G Mound Applied Technologies. He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Claflin University and a master’s degree in statistics from Wright State University.

Medical staff member Charles A. Bramlett, M.D., PCA Southeast, has been reappointed to the advisory board. Those advisory board members whose terms have expired were honored for their service and include Bill Alsup, Derek Church and Kae Fleming.

Several recent and upcoming board of trustees recognitions include:

  • Stephen Simmons, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine, retired on November 9. Dr. Simmons joined the medical staff in 1977. He served as chief of the medical staff in 1997 and during his tenure served on numerous committees, including Joint Conference Committee, Medicine Committee, Quality Review Committee, Medical Staff Health Committee and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Cardiologist Jacques P. Heibig, M.D., retired from the medical staff on December 31. He arrived in Tennessee in 1996 and joined the MRMC medical staff in 1998. He was most recently associated with Vanderbilt Heart-Columbia. Dr. Heibig served as a member of several committees including Critical Care Committee, Medicine Department Committee and the Continuing Medical Education Committee.
  • John Simmons, M.D., M.P.H., a specialist in internal medicine, retired on January 31. Dr. Simmons served as chief of staff in 1996 and served on numerous committees, including Joint Conference Committee, Medicine Committee, Quality Review Committee, Medical Staff Health Committee and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. He will be recognized at the February board meeting.
  • Thomas Quinn Jr., M.D., a specialist in pulmonary and critical care medicine who has been a member of the medical staff since 2009, was recognized for his service in the role of chief of staff in 2017.
