COLUMBIA, Tenn. — Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) and the Maury Regional Women’s Center have been awarded accreditation in multiple imaging modalities, including ultrasound, breast ultrasound, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast MRI as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The imaging modalities receiving ACR accreditation are:

  • Ultrasound imaging – this technology uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and better treat medical conditions. The accredited ultrasound services offered at MRMC include imaging for adults as well as pediatric patients.
  • Breast ultrasound – this ultrasound performed in the Women’s Center may be recommended to further study an issue found on a mammogram or physician exam. Ultrasound may also be used to guide a biopsy of the breast area.
  • Stereotactic breast biopsy – this procedure performed in the Women’s Center uses mammography to locate abnormal areas in the breast and remove a sample for further study.
  • Breast magnetic resonance imaging (breast MRI) – this imaging study captures multiple images that are combined to create a detailed view of the breast and provide valuable information about many breast conditions that may not be obtained by other imaging modalities.

“We are very pleased that the services offered by our Outpatient Imaging Center and Women’s Center have been recognized in this manner,” said Maury Regional Health Interim CEO Martin Chaney, MD. “Maury Regional Health remains committed to offering the most advanced imaging tools for our patients, including ultrasound for all ages and modalities that help diagnose breast cancer at early stages. Our staff and physicians are to be commended for their role in the accreditation process for these important diagnostic services.”

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR practice parameters and technical standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.

The Outpatient Imaging Center at MRMC offers a range of imaging services, including MRI, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, X-ray and wellness screenings. The Maury Regional Women’s Center offers a number of women's imaging services, including 3D mammography, bone densitometry and breast ultrasound. Accreditations for imaging services are granted in three-year cycles and additionally include CT, mammography, MRI, nuclear medicine and PET.
