Marshall Medical Center’s ‘swing beds’ support transitional care from hospital to home

LEWISBURG, Tenn. — Marshall Medical Center’s (MMC) hospital-to-home program — sometimes referred to as “swing beds” — assists those who have had joint replacement, other surgery or an extended illness to regain strength and function to return home.

Designed for patients requiring rehabilitation without the need for long-term care or a patient with minimal to no hands-on support at home, MMC’s hospital-to-home program offers:

  • Customized rehabilitation: Suitable for patients of any age with conditions that are amenable to rehabilitation, including those requiring occupational, speech or physical therapy.
  • 24/7 dedicated care: MMC’s program boasts a lower nurse-to-patient ratio than traditional nursing home care, ensuring personalized and attentive support around the clock.
  • Private, comfortable accommodations: Each swing bedroom features a private bathroom, recliner, additional seating and a bed, providing a quiet and comfortable atmosphere for recovery.
  • Entertainment and amenities: Patients can enjoy cable TV and accommodating meals tailored to their needs and preferences.

“The team at Marshall Medical Center is like a family, and we enjoy working together for all of our patients to provide excellent care,” said Kim Thomason, MSN, RN, nurse manager/care manager at MMC. “Due to the duration of their stay, we build strong relationships with our swing bed patients. Our program not only facilitates physical recovery but also provides essential transitional support, helping patients regain their independence and return home with confidence.”

With a focus on individualized therapy and a nurturing environment, MMC strives to ensure that every patient receives the highest standard of care.

“The swing bed program has been wonderful for me. I have family nearby, but they have busy lives and jobs. I live alone and my bedroom is upstairs, so healing from my procedure would have been challenging if not impossible to immediately head home post-surgery,” shared patient Helen A. Hill. “This has been a wonderful opportunity to heal alongside a wonderful medical team at Marshall Medical Center until I have the strength to be home.”
