Electronic cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, vapes and juuls, are devices that use a battery and heating element to produce an aerosol that often contains nicotine, the same drug found in regular cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products. The aerosol produced by an electronic cigarette also includes flavorings and other chemicals, which is inhaled into the user's lungs.

E-cigarettes come in various shapes and sizes. A juul is a pen-like device that holds a juul pod. The amount of nicotine in a juul pod is higher than in other e-cigarettes. Because of their size and shape, looking much like a jump drive, juul pods are not as easily detected.

There are no long-term studies that show the safety and effects of e-cigarettes. For someone trying to quit smoking, these devices may be an alternative to traditional cigarettes; however, electronic cigarettes should never be used by a nonsmoker. Various chemicals found in the liquid used inside electronic cigarettes are known carcinogens and toxins. Until 2016, there were no regulations on electronic cigarettes. An individual must now be 18 years old to purchase.
