sleep studies

Sleep studies are a form of diagnostic testing that assist in diagnosing a variety of sleep disorders that may impact one's health. Sleep studies are conducted with a physician referral for adults and children as young as two years of age.

During a sleep study, an individual is monitored with devices that record heart rate, snoring, airflow, oxygen levels, brain waves and movement in the muscles and eyes. The sleep study data is then interpreted by a board-certified sleep medicine physician, who will share the results of the study with your physician to discuss with you.

types of sleep studies

Sleep studies - also known as polysomnography - may be conducted in a Sleep Center. Maury Regional Health offers sleep studies at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, Marshall Medical Center in Lewisburg and at Wayne Medical Center in Waynesboro, as well as at our Sleep Center in Lawrenceburg.

Studies are routinely scheduled for Sunday through Friday nights. Saturday nights and daytime studies during the week are available upon request.

In addition to studies performed in our facilities, we offer options for at-home testing. These options include the WatchPAT® home sleep apnea test that records certain data during your normal sleep cycle at home. This type of testing allows a patient to remain in the comfort of home for testing using a wearable device that includes easy-to-follow instructions for use.

Ask your physician which sleep study option is best to meet your individual needs.

Most insurances are accepted; however, coverage may vary. Check with your insurance provider for details.

Are you a candidate for a sleep study?

Living with a sleep disorder can mean more than feeling tired — it can have serious long-term implications on your health. Sleep studies assist in diagnosing conditions such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, insomnia and sleepwalking

The warning signs of a sleep disorder are most often noticed by a loved one who has observed the individual during sleep. Studies may be recommended for individuals who for several weeks have experienced one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Waking frequently and struggling to return to sleep
  • Feeling tired, irritable or having trouble concentrating throughout the day
  • Snoring loudly
  • Waking up gasping for breath
  • Kicking or jerking while asleep
  • Difficulty staying awake while watching TV or reading
