COVID-19: Tips for Parents

The CDC has issued a number of recommendations for parents and guardians to keep in mind and to share with their children to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

Discourage children and teens from gathering in public places or in groups to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community. Stay home and avoid using any kind of public transportation, ridesharing or taxis.

  • Avoid close contact with others, especially those who are sick or could be at-risk.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces, such as door handles, keys, credit cards, cell phones, etc.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available
  • Avoid touching your eyes, noses and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue.

The CDC also recommends several general principles for talking to children about COVID-19, including:

  • Remaining calm and reassuring
  • Making yourself available to talk and listen
  • Avoiding language that might blame others and lead to stigma
  • Providing information that is honest and accurate
  • Teaching children everyday actions to reduce the spread of germs
