COLUMBIA, Tenn. – Betty S. Kim, M.D., a specialist in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, has joined the medical staff at Maury Regional Hospital. Dr. Kim is associated with Vanderbilt Medical Group and will lead the cardiovascular and thoracic surgery services for the Heart Center at Maury Regional Hospital (MRH).

MRH began offering cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in January 2004. In April, MRH formed a surgical partnership with Vanderbilt University Medical Center—a leading provider of state-of-the-art heart surgery—to expand its cardiovascular and thoracic surgery services. Dr. Kim will lead this effort.

Dr. Kim received her medical degree from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. She completed an internship in general surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She completed a residency in general surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Kim later completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a senior fellowship in advanced adult cardiac surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Prior to joining Maury Regional Hospital’s medical staff, Dr. Kim served 14 years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She then went on to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and to Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, Massachusetts, where she served as an associate surgeon on the medical staff and as an instructor for Harvard Medical School. She is an assistant professor of cardiac and thoracic surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Her husband, Scott Shay, M.D., is the chief of interventional neuroradiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
