Drug disposal event to be held at Collinwood health fair on April 26

WAYNESBORO, Tenn. — Prescription medication that is no longer needed can be disposed of safely during a free health fair in Collinwood on Saturday, April 26. Wayne Medical Center (WMC) will host its annual health fair that day from 8 a.m. until noon, at Collinwood Middle School. The event will feature a free drug-take back opportunity.

According to WMC Pharmacy Director Olivia Barrington, PharmD, the medical center will partner with the Collinwood Police Department to offer free disposal of unwanted and expired prescription medications. The event is part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, an observance led by the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

“Many families have prescription medicines in their homes that are out-of-date or that are no longer needed. It is important to dispose of these substances, but it can be difficult to know the best way to do so,” said Barrington. “We are pleased to work with the Collinwood Police Department to offer this opportunity.”

Those who have prescription drugs that are expired or not needed may bring them to the upcoming health fair. Medications should be in the original package if possible.

“By disposing of unwanted medicines, families can reduce the potential that someone in their home may take the wrong drug or one that is out-of-date,” said Collinwood Police Chief David Martin.

In addition to the drug take-back event, the health fair will feature a number of free health screenings along with health and wellness information, activities for children, refreshments and door prizes.

Health fair sponsors are Wayne Medical Center, Duren’s Health Mart Pharmacy, Lifespan Health, Wayne County Bank, Bank of Collinwood, Collinwood Drugs, Deaconess Home Care, Peoples Bank, TN Quality Homecare and Hospice, Volunteer Homecare of West TN, Volunteer Hospice, Wayne County Assisted Living and Wayne County Nursing Home.
