Maury Regional implements new stroke imaging technology

06.12.2020

COLUMBIA, TN – Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) has adopted the Rapid Processing of Perfusion and Diffusion (RAPID®) platform, the most advanced cerebrovascular imaging software for identifying treatment options for stroke patients.

A stroke occurs when a vessel in the brain is blocked by a blood clot or ruptures. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of permanent disability in the U.S.

“The RAPID® platform is powered by artificial intelligence and provides blood flow mapping to give the stroke team at Maury Regional fast, fully automated, and easy-to-interpret imaging that aids in clinical decision-making for patients suffering from a stroke,” said Jeffry Ruff, D.O., a specialist in neurology and medical director for the stroke center program at MRMC. “As an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, this technology has enhanced our ability to expedite a diagnosis and treat more patients locally.”

The RAPID® platform enables physicians to be informed and easily communicate about the extent of a patient’s blood flow changes in the brain. Developed by leading stroke experts, the Rapid platform combines deep learning, machine learning and expert feature extraction for diagnostic clinicians. Together these provide unparalleled sensitivity and specificity across stroke modules. Results are then delivered within minutes via picture archive and communication system (PACS), email, a mobile app or hospital-specific workflow systems. The RAPID® platform at MRMC includes:

  • RAPID® CTP: fully-automated perfusion (passage of blood) maps; accurately quantifies reduced cerebral blood flow, cerebral blood volume and transit time
  • RAPID® CTA: automatically delivers CT angiography maps and identifies brain regions with reduced blood vessel density in 2D and 3D views
  • RAPID® Mobile App: allows physicians to securely preview results from multiple sites on mobile devices

The RAPID® platform helps hospitals like MRMC improve patient outcomes and gain operational efficiencies by giving stroke team members:

  • Validated, trusted results— RAPID®AI’s clinically proven, data-driven technology empowers clinicians to make faster, more accurate diagnostic and treatment decisions.
  • Speedy delivery—Results are delivered in as few as 90 seconds after a patient scan, enabling physicians to make faster treatment decisions.
  • Anytime, anywhere access—The RAPID® Mobile App saves precious time by alerting users to new cases wherever they are, giving them access to RapidAI results, and allowing them to preview source files.
  • Mobile communications—HIPAA-compliant communication features in the RAPID® Mobile App allow stroke team members to quickly align on patient care.

In addition to having the broadest FDA clearance of any imaging software designed to measure blood flow in the brain, the RAPID® platform is the only stroke imaging solution clinically validated in more than a dozen major trials. It was the exclusive imaging system used for patient selection for two landmark stroke trials published in The New England Journal of Medicine, DAWN and DEFUSE 3, that successfully treated patients up to 24 hours after onset. The results of these studies led the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to change its stroke guidelines in 2018 to expand the stroke treatment window from six hours to 24 hours for eligible patients.

According to the American Stroke Association, high blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke and the most significant controllable risk factor. The American Stroke Association encourages BE FAST as an easy way to remember the sudden signs of stroke and when to call 911.

Balance - Sudden loss of balance or dizziness
Eyes - Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
Face - One side of the face is drooping
Arms - One arm is weak or numb
Speech - Sudden difficulty speaking or understanding, slurred speech
Time - Call 911 immediately

The faster one seeks medical help, the better the chances for recovery. Clot-dissolving drugs have the potential to dramatically reduce long-term disability if given within three hours of having a stroke or up to 4.5 hours in certain eligible patients. Another procedure called mechanical thrombectomy is available at comprehensive stroke centers for eligible patients up to 24 hours of stroke onset.
