COLUMBIA, Tenn. — The American Heart Association (AHA) recently recognized Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) and Maury Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for implementing specific quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients experiencing cardiac arrest or heart attack.

Maury Regional Medical Center received AHA’s Get With The Guidelines®–Resuscitation Gold Plus Award, which was developed to save the lives of those who experience in-hospital cardiac arrests by outlining the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines for treatment. These guidelines include protocols for patient safety, medical emergency team response, effective and timely resuscitation (CPR) and post-resuscitation care. To receive the Get With The Guidelines®–Resuscitation Gold Plus Award, a hospital must comply with the quality resuscitation measures outlined by the program for two consecutive calendar years and be within the top two quintiles for annual risk-adjusted survival of cardiac arrest patients.
“We are pleased to recognize Maury Regional Medical Center for their commitment to following these guidelines,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., the national chairperson of the Quality Oversight Committee. “Shortening the time to effective resuscitation and maximizing post-resuscitation care is critical to patient survival.”
Maury Regional EMS also received recognition from AHA with the Mission: Lifeline® EMS Silver Award for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience heart attacks.
The Mission: Lifeline® initiative provides tools, training and other resources to support heart attack care by outlining protocols from the most recent evidence-based treatment guidelines. Mission: Lifeline’s® EMS program recognizes EMS professionals for their efforts in improving systems of care to rapidly identify suspected heart attack patients, promptly notify the medical center and trigger an early response from the awaiting hospital personnel. To receive a Mission: Lifeline® Silver Award, Maury Regional EMS maintained performance levels set forth by the guidelines for at least one calendar year.
“EMTs and paramedics play a vital part in the system of care for those who have heart attacks,” said Tim Henry, M.D., chair of the Mission: Lifeline® Acute Coronary Syndrome Subcommittee. “Since they often are the first medical point of contact, they can save precious minutes of treatment time by activating the emergency response system that alerts hospitals to an incoming heart attack patient. We applaud Maury Regional EMS for achieving this award in following evidence-based guidelines in the treatment of people who have severe heart attacks.”
