Maury Regional Medical Center to offer nicotine cessation series in January

12.01.2021

COLUMBIA, Tenn. — If you or someone you know wants to stop using nicotine in the new year, a free program offered by Maury Regional Health is available. Registration is open now for a four-week nicotine cessation series, set to begin January 4 in Columbia.

The free nicotine cessation program will be offered at Maury Regional Medical Center over a series of four sessions, held each Tuesday in January. Classes will meet January 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 6 p.m. Sessions will be led by Sharon Dobbins, a respiratory therapist and former smoker.

“Quitting cigarettes, vaping products and smokeless tobacco may be the single most important thing a person can do to improve their health,” said Dobbins. “As a former smoker, I can personally relate to the challenges that come with trying to stop using tobacco products and encourage those who are trying to quit to join this supportive group session.”

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death, accounting for nearly one in five deaths each year in the United States. For every person who dies because of smoking, it is estimated that another 30 people experience a serious illness related to smoking. When an individual quits smoking, they are lowering their risk for cancer, heart disease, lung disease and improving their overall quality of life.

Advance registration for the nicotine cessation program is requested so that course materials may be prepared. To register, click here or call 931.381.1111, extension 2445.

Please note that masking is required in all Maury Regional Health facilities.
