Marshall Medical Center mammography earns accreditation

LEWISBURG, Tenn. — Marshall Medical Center (MMC) recently earned accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR) for mammography services, including 3D mammography added earlier this year.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed as part of the review.

“Our imaging staff and radiologists are continually dedicated to quality and safety. Their commitment to our mammography patients is reflected by this accreditation,” said MMC CEO Phyllis Brown.

Earlier this year, MMC began offering Genius™ 3D Mammography™ developed by Hologic, Inc. A Genius exam includes both 2D and 3D images. During the 3D portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. This creates a three-dimensional view of the breast structure, enabling radiologists to more clearly see through overlapping tissue to detect cancers, often at an earlier stage. In recent years, 3D technology has become a standard of care for mammography exams.
