COLUMBIA, Tenn. — Maury Regional Health’s sleep center facilities in Columbia, Lawrenceburg, Lewisburg and Waynesboro all recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas, such as personnel, facilities and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care and quality assurance. The goals of the sleep center must also be stated clearly and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community.
“Our Maury Regional Health sleep centers consist of highly skilled teams dedicated to improving patients’ health and quality of life,” said Shaun C. Corbin, M.D., a board-certified specialist in sleep medicine who serves as the medical director for all four sleep center facilities. “Sleep disorders can have serious implications on one’s health. Most people associate them with feeling tired, but they can lead to a number of greater issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.”
Sleep centers perform studies that are used to diagnose a variety of sleep disorders — the most common being sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and insomnia. Sleep studies at Maury Regional Health facilities are conducted with a physician referral and monitor heart rate, snoring, airflow, oxygen levels, brain waves and movements in the muscles and eyes.
