Respirator exams part of Maury Regional Occupation Health offerings

For businesses whose employees must undergo a respirator medical examination in order to perform the duties of their job, Maury Regional Occupational Health is the perfect partner.

Employees who must wear a respirator on the job are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to undergo a respirator medical examination every one to two years, depending on respirator type, job type, the employee’s health status, environmental conditions and other regulatory requirements.

The exam is designed to help determine whether wearing a respirator will limit or interfere with an employee’s breathing, vision, communication or use of other equipment.

“Some medical conditions can make it difficult for an employee to wear a respirator properly at work, which can potentially be dangerous,” said Amy Richardson, NP-C, director of occupational and employee health services for Maury Regional Health. “It’s important to be transparent about your health status and fully describe your workplace environment when undergoing a respirator examination to ensure your safety.”

During a respirator medical examination, an employee completes an OSHA Respirator Medical Evaluation Questionnaire that is reviewed by a physician or other licensed health care provider. They determine if the employee is cleared for respirator use with no restrictions, cleared with restrictions, isn’t cleared for any respirator use or needs a follow-up examination.

“Our experienced team at Maury Regional Occupational Health has extensive knowledge regarding OSHA guidelines in order to give a thorough medical opinion for respirator use,” Richardson said.

Employees sent to Maury Regional Occupational Health for a respirator medical examination can do so on a walk-in basis Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Any necessary follow-up appointment will then be scheduled.

Visits to Maury Regional Occupational Health are not billed to the employee’s personal insurance. All bills are sent directly to the employer or to the workers’ compensation insurance carrier. In addition, personal payment is an option for those who are self-employed.
