Rural Emergency Hospital Designation
Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) designation is a Medicare provider type that allows approved rural hospitals to provide essential services. Under this designation, the hospital offers a 24/7 Emergency Department and observation services for patients who need additional testing to determine the path to discharge or transfer for additional care. Diagnostic testing services include X-ray, CT and laboratory. Wayne Medical Center also offers the outpatient services of endoscopy, mammography and physical therapy.

Emergency care
Care for medical emergencies is close to home in Wayne Medical Center’s Emergency Department — open 24 hours a day, seven days a week — which is staffed around the clock by physicians and registered nurses along with other essential personnel.
Wayne Medical Center Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is also available 24/7 and is staffed with paramedics and emergency medical technicians who provide care during transport to the Emergency Department.

Observation unit
Wayne Medical Center offers an observation unit for patients who need additional testing for the continuum of care for up to a 24-hour stay.
Imaging
Wayne Medical Center offers an array of diagnostic and screening imaging tests, with images interpreted by board-certified radiologists on Maury Regional Health’s medical staff. Our imaging services include:
- Bone densitometry
- Computed tomography (24/7)
- Magnetic resonance imaging
- Mammography
- Ultrasound
- Wellness screenings
- X-ray (24/7)

Infusion
The infusion of medications, blood products and other treatments is administered by our trained nursing staff. These services include:
- IV hydration
- Blood transfusions
- Reclast
- Prolia
- Iron replacement
- Antibiotics
- Therapeutic phlebotomy

Laboratory
Our laboratory technologists collect specimens as requested by your doctor for diagnostic testing, with results reported to your physician as soon as possible. The laboratory is available seven days per week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is fully accredited by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of the State of Tennessee, The Joint Commission and College of American Pathologists.
In addition to the collection process and test results that are conducted at Wayne Medical Center, some specimens may be transported to the laboratory at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia or to another lab for diagnostic testing.
Results of laboratory testing allow your physician to have a more complete picture of your health to aid in diagnosing and monitoring health conditions.
Physical and other therapies
Wayne Medical Center Physical Therapy provides rehabilitation services to improve quality of life after injury, surgery or illness. Our experienced therapy professionals provide their advanced services in our outpatient gym, including:

Respiratory care
Respiratory therapists perform testing and treatment for breathing disorders and illnesses affecting the respiratory system. These tests require a physician’s order and include:
- Pulmonary function testing
- Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)
- Cardiac Holter monitors (24-48 hours)
- Cardiac event monitors (up to 30 days)
- At-home sleep studies
- Arterial blood gases
