Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is offered at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) by physician’s order. The noninvasive computed tomography (CT) exam provides a detailed 3D image of the coronary arteries to show abnormalities in blood flow, such as blockages, and their severity.

CCTA is typically ordered for patients who meet the following criteria:

  • 65 years of age or younger
  • Experiencing signs of heart disease (chest discomfort or shortness of breath)
  • No prior history of coronary artery disease
  • Body mass index (BMI) of less than 40
  • Have unclear findings from a stress test
  • Must be able to take beta blocker prior to exam

In certain cases, CCTA may be considered for patients who have known heart disease, such as prior coronary stent placement or have had artery bypass surgery. Ask your physician if you have any qualification questions.

How to prepare for CCTA

Patients are required to take a beta blocker medication to lower their heart rate prior to the exam. They’re also required to avoid caffeinated drinks and food (e.g., coffee, tea, sodas, energy drinks or chocolate) prior to the test.

Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking prior to the exam. They may recommend avoiding taking certain medications prior to the exam.

Does insurance cover this service?

Most insurance providers will cover CCTA if the patient qualifies for the exam. Patients should always contact their insurance company for verification of coverage and benefits.
